The following are the general guidelines and regulations governing the collection of garbage and recyclables in the Borough of Spring Lake. If you cannot find the answer to your questions here, please contact Borough Hall at 732-449-0800.
Reclamation Center Hours: Monday through Saturday 8:00 am. to 4:00 p.m. The Center is located at Fifth and Salem Avenues.
Spring Lake Borough's Grass: Cut it and leave it program: The Borough does not accept any grass clippings at the curb or recycling center. Improve the health of your lawn and save money by cutting the grass and leaving the clippings on the lawn. Grass clippings are a natural fertilizer, help retain moisture, reduce weed growth and soil erosian. By recycling grass clippings you save the cost to transport the grass clippings to composting facilities. A 5,000 square foot lawn produces 2,000 pounds of grass clippings per year.
Keep grass 2-3 inches high. Tall grass shades the soil and cools the grass roots.
Use grass clippings a mulch.
Mix grass clippings into your soil to moderate soil temperature and reduce runoff from your gardens.
RECYCLING: Curbside pickup of recycling is now "single stream recycling". The following items can be combined in one sturdy non-disposable plastic or metal container. Do not use plastic bags.
-Newspapers and all inserts
-Mixed papers including letter head, colored and white paper, junk mail, soft covered books, chipboard (e.g. cereal boxes)
-Wrapping paper including your Christmas wrapping paper
-Corrugated Cardboard- emptied and flattened. Do not include pizza boxes or other food contaminated cardboard
-Bottles and Cans- aluminum cans, tin and bi-metal cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic pour-able containers
Bulky Items: (chairs, sofas, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, stoves, bed mattresses and box springs, carpeting and similar items) may be placed at the curb on designated bulk pickup days only
Tree Limbs, Hedges, and Shrubbery: Place at the curb on designated brush pickup days only with the ends all facing one direction. Bundle may not exceed 4 feet in length, 2 inches in diameter. Please do not mix with your leaves; ask your landscaper to refrain from mixing brush with your leaves so we can keep our leaf collection machines running efficiently.
Leaves: Please refer to calendar for leaf pick up dates. Leaves may also be taken to the Reclamation Center October 15th through January 5th.
Grass Clippings and Other Vegetation: NOT ACCEPTED Please compost or leave on lawn
Refrigeration Appliances: No curbside pickup; accepted at the Reclamation Center.
Electronics: No curbside pick up, Accepted at the reclamation center (be careful not to break television screens)
Batteries: Put disposable non-rechargable batters in household trash. Re-chargable batters may be taken to the retailer where purchased. Automotive batteries are accepted at the reclamation center.
Hazardous or Construction Materials, Tires, or Paint will not be collected. Please call Monmouth County Hazardous Waste Facility at 732-683-8686
For safety's sake, we cannot allow any resident to scavenge from the containers. Other towns have reported serious injuries and in one case a fatality occurred from people trying to retrieve articles from containers. If you accidentally drop or discard something, please see an attendance for assistance. After you have emptied your containers, please exit the facility in a timely manner. This will limit the wait time for those entering the facility.
A Borough Issued Decal is required to use the Reclamation Center. Decals are available at the Borough Clerk's Office for Spring Lake residents only and are issued to the property owner only. Landlords must pick up the sticker(s) for their tenant(s).
