The Spring Lake First Aid Squad was formed in the summer of 1928. The squad was formally incorporated in the spring of 1930, as the second incorporated squad in the country. Belmar was the first. The squad participated during the Morro Castle disaster by treating 128 people who had made their way to shore. We were also the second squad to arrive at the Hindenburg tragedy at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station.
The squad provides emergency medical (First Aid) treatment and transportation to hospitals for residents and visitors to Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights. The squad answers all fire calls as standby in case of an injury to a firefighter. The squad drives over 7500 miles answering over 900 first aid and fire calls each year. This represents over 2000 volunteer hours saving the taxpayers of Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights almost $75,000 each year.
The squad is funded in two ways. One is by a line item on both the Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights Borough budgets, and the second is by the generous contributions of both boroughs residents. The Spring Lake First Aid Squad is completely volunteer and welcomes new members. If you want to make a difference in your community in this manner please contact the squad for information and an application to join using the information above. No experience is necessary, the squad will arrange for all necessary training.

The members of Spring Lake Volunteer Fire Department proudly serve residents of the Spring Lake community. Members and their families, some spanning generations, selflessly dedicate their time to our town. These men and women are tasked with responding to various emergencies, with firefighting at the forefront. In addition, they respond to motor vehicle accidents, fallen utility lines, water rescues, flooding, and more. Our firefighters volunteer countless hours training and maintaining equipment to best serve our community.
Beyond responding to emergencies, they assist Spring Lakers through community service. SLVFD proudly organizes The New Year's Day Open House, Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Contest, and Santa Toy Deliveries. Members attend and assist in local parades, antique fire engine shows, Spring Lake festivals, the fishing contest, and other events hosted by fellow civic organizations.

Spring Lake Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 2023 through consolidation of historic Spring Lake Fire Co. 1 and Goodwill Fire Co. 2 who began serving Spring Lake in 1890 and 1901 respectively. The long-standing traditions of these organizations are honored today as SLVFD continues providing fire service to the Borough.
Spring Lake Fire Company No.1 was formed in 1890, prior to The Borough’s incorporation. The Fire Company was created to serve fire protection needs of local residents. Spring Lake Beach had a growing number of hotels and many large cottages for summer renting. The newly formed fire district consisted of “Lake Como on the north, Wreck Pond on the south, and Route 71 on the west." The first fire house was built in 1892 at Fifth and Warren Avenues, across from the Lake. During the early 1900s Spring Lake’s firehouse hosted various entities. It was used as the local courthouse, public school, for dances and dance classes. Goodwill Fire Company No. 2 even held early meetings there until they could secure a firehouse of their own. Over the years new equipment was acquired and the company outgrew its home. In 1957, a new building was erected on the same site and was enlarged with a second floor in 2004. SL Fire Co 1 has traditionally staffed ladder trucks performing search and rescue, ladder and firefighting operations.
The historic fire of 1900 destroyed most of the Spring Lake Beach’s business district (then on 1st Ave), the Monmouth House, the Carleton Hotel, and cottages. Third Avenue was expanding and becoming the major business district itself. It was decided by North Spring Lake residents and business owners to add fire protection beyond Spring Lake Beach. Thus in 1901 Goodwill Fire Company was formed. Goodwill was offered use of SL Fire Co 1’s building for keeping equipment and was lent use of its fire bugle. Goodwill’s first piece of equipment was a circa 1900 hand-drawn chemical engine and hose. Eventually, the company’s headquarters was established at 311 Washington Avenue. Goodwill’s Golden Jubilee anniversary in 1951 included a parade that was considered the biggest ever held in the Borough. Fire companies from all over the state sent representation and equipment. Upgrades for modern day fire-fighting were needed and in 1989 the Borough built a new fire and police station on Washington Avenue. Goodwill Fire Co was primarily the engine company with the primary purpose of establishing a water supply and suppressing fires.
